A 365 day lesson in learning to loosen up, to forget being "perfect", and to learn to love the line... My half hour journey to enlightenment via the train and its passengers.

Four More
This five minute thing is a good tool for making yourself lay the line and quit thinking about it too hard. Go with the gut, put it in, and it'll feel right. :-)

Three circles and a line. In the past I'd added in some details roughly in pencil to get features' sizes but in the past few days I've given it up. Now I sketch three circles. One for the approximate area of the face, one for the depth of the skull, and one for the nose. Then a curved line bisecting the front of the face to help me with the direction the face is pointing. The rest is up to the pen and any hiccups that may occur on the train as it lurches to and fro or rides smoothly into the next station. It's a bit more fun, I have to say.... :)

In the dark....
Today it was VERY bright on the train. Um. Until we hit the tunnel. Only then did I realize that the heat WASN'T because of the sun, it was turned on to BROIL, and the light WAS the sun. And suddenly it was gone. Blocked out by the serpentine cave we traveled through, it was like we were riding the train to hell. And this guy was getting comfy for the ride. I could barely see what I was sketching, but was very pleased when I looked at it in actual light.

Five minute Bennett
Another five minute-r. Between staring at my current art project and working on it and sneezing I thought I'd get in a bit of linework. The cool thing about five minutes is that you're forcing yourself to speed up and not be so careful in laying line. Which can make for some pretty cool lines. Or it can make for disaster. Either way, it's fun. :-D

Five minute Webby...
Sadly, the marker I grabbed to DRAW the five minute Webby in was well on it's way out the door. So she's pretty pale here. But not too bad... :-)

No...
No this is NOT a five minute sketch of Big D. Absolutely not. Fine. It is. But it WAS in five minutes. :-P

no space....
I made the mistake this morning of sitting my backpack down under my feet while I was standing in the back of the train this morning. Whoops. It was wedged a bit under the seat in front of me and then the train got crowded so I couldn't really get into it for the thick marker that worked. :-) I'm running out of ends at different times. Some skinny and some thick are going away. But not at the same time on the same pen. ~Sketches From A Train

Shadowy Nap
Someone did not appreciate the sun this morning. She'd covered her head with her jacket before I ever got on and fell asleep until one stop before I got off. And the other lady up there....well, she was sleepy too...

Today wasn't a sketching day. Today was a coloring day. I pulled out my pastels and started shading in my sketch from the other day. I'm trying to not use any solid lines, to make the faces softer (since you don't really see solid lines on people when you stare at them. Anyhoo, I kinda like the way this is going. And obviously it's not anywhere near done. I've got a range of colors going that may seem pale in comparison to the eyes, but then I haven't filled in her hair and eyebrows, and while she has dark eyes and hair, she also has a fairly pale complexion. I'll stretch out the range if need be, but too dark at first, and there's no way to back it off. :-)

09-01-2012. Lines
Annette and her boy. No, doesn't look like them exactly, but my pen wanted to do something else and I just let it go. After all, it's all about the line, right? ;-)
